Our “Blog Personality”

Blogging is an interesting communication medium. Depending on what you want to write and convey, readers form an opinion or idea of the person behind the blog. On occasions I read my own blog and if I can stand back and assess what kind of person behind our blog, I would say this person/couple is serious, most of the time. I’m laughing now because WE’RE TOTALLY NOT THAT SERIOUS. In reality, we are a goofy couple who likes to joke around. Our close friends (ok, all two of you please chime in and say so) can testify to that.

Two years ago we met a couple who had been reading our blog prior to our first meeting. After interacting with us for several days, the husband said to my husband, “You are not who I think you are based on your blog. On your blog you are really spiritual and serious, but in real life you’re really funny too. I think you’d be a great youth pastor.” To that we just laughed. We’re quite amused.

Based on comments and feedbacks from people who have visited on blog, we do come off as pretty serious and intense. Some have said we’re the type of people they would want to meet or have coffee with. Hmmm. . . now that I let the cat out of the bag concerning our goofy personality, I’m not sure if they would still want to meet us.

If we’re truly goofy, why then is our blog so serious? Our blog is an expression of our thought life and even though we’re quite nutty, we do have a serious side. The topics that interest us and are important to us tend to be more serious. The intent of our blog is to write about things that would bring glory to God, and thus far we are only able to express our thoughts in a more serious matter. I believe that bringing glory to God can also be expressed through being funny and goofy. However, I think at this point we lack talents and gifts in this arena.

I had never thought about “blog personality”! What a great topic. It’s making me think about what my blog must say about me. Surely my written words are more carefully chosen and conveyed than the nonsense that my favorite coffee shop usually gets as I’m begging them for my morning latte. It’s interesting to think that through blogging we can choose to highlight certain aspects of ourselves and cleverly hide others. When I first started blogging in it’s official sense, I wanted to make sure I wasn’t wasting the reader’s time. I hoped that my blog would glorify God but also show how He is working in our lives. I have always enjoyed your “serious” posts but can’t wait for the day we can get the families together and pretend to be youth pastors! We’ll be in town in March to see Steve’s folks! Maybe we can get together for coffee and discuss the major points of Calvinism…hmm, or not. ;-)

I’m glad to hear that you guys are a little goofy!

I tend to learn about people by the books they are reading — GREAT books in your sidebar, in my humble opinion.

What I particularly appreciate about your blog is that it reflects a serious effort to glorify God as you raise your children…simply living your lives to His glory.

I too am glad to know that you guys are goofy too!!

BTW Lois, a while back you posted about really cute dresses you had made the girls. I never did write down the pattern so I was wondering if you could give me the link for that post. They had angel wing sleeves and tie backs. They were just precious.

You know, when you blog, you’re putting words out there in cyberspace for the WORLD to see. I think it’s good to use a lot of discretion. You’d rather be considered too serious than cause doubts about your character. So I think we can’t totally judge a person’s fun factor by his/her blog. There are many things I would say that I’d never write on my blog!!

BTW…I’m planning on making those funnel cakes one day!
